Akademiks Clothing was founded in 1999 by two brothers, Donwan and Emmett Harrell, in Brooklyn, New York. Donwan Harrell serves as the CEO and lead designer of Akademiks, while his brother Emmett is the COO. The brand specializes in urban streetwear and is known for its bold and colorful designs, featuring the brand’s signature logo of an owl. Akademiks Clothing has gained a reputation for being worn by high-profile hip-hop artists, such as Nas, Eminem, and Jay-Z. In 2004, the brand was purchased by the fashion company, Fubu, for an undisclosed amount.
